All requirements for marketing omega-3 fatty acid DHActive* in the U.S. now met | ||
An independent, international team of experts has granted DHActive GRAS ("generally regarded as safe") status, thus enabling it to meet U.S. standards necessary to market it for use in dietary supplements (mainly capsules) and in traditional foods such as baked goods, cereals, dairy products, fruit juices or snacks. PROTOS ® -Biotech, the biotechnology unit at Celanese Ventures, will market the most important omega-3 fatty acid called docosahexanoeic acid (DHA) under the brand name DHActive. Scientific studies show that DHA is important for the development of babies and for the prevention of mental and cardio-vascular disease. PROTOS-Biotech uses highly developed microorganisms called protists to produce DHActive. DHActive contains a higher percentage of DHA compared to the omega-3 fatty acids extracted from fish and it maintains a constant level of high quality, has a pleasant taste and exhibits no toxic impurities. Celanese Ventures has successfully developed the biotechnology platform and DHActive to marketability. Nutrinova, Celanese AG's food ingredients business, will take over PROTOS-Biotech on July 1. It will market DHActive and develop new products for its "health food ingredients" business. "Based on the interplay between Protos-Biotech's technological competencies and Nutrinova's global presence, market experience and access to customers, we expect the product to be a quick success on the market for functional food products and nutritional supplements," says Arthur Steinmetz, Nutrinova's CEO, concerning the decision. The project's successful transition to Nutrinova is proof that Celanese Ventures' strategy to make technologies and new products marketable in a short time, thus generating value for Celanese AG, is the right approach.
