Dallas, Texas June 7, 2010. Guide formulas based on Celanese Emulsion Polymers’ EcoVAE® resins have been approved by the Master
Painters Institute® (MPI) Starting Point Program. EcoVAE® 401 and EcoVAE® 405 have been approved in
guide formulas 10-ES36031 and 10-FL48030 for use in MPI class #44 and #143 respectively for use in architectural
interior paints. “Celanese Emulsion Polymers is proud to be one of the early supporters of the MPI Starting Point Program
through our qualification of EcoVAE® resins in two different MPI classes,” said Jared Elliott, marketing
manager. “The MPI approval will be another way that we can assist our customers in producing low odor,
low VOC paints which are preferred by today’s increasingly eco-conscious consumer,” said Elliott.
The
guide formulations approved by MPI include the following:
- EcoVAE® 401
resin in #44 latex, interior (MPI gloss level 2), formula 10-ES36031
- EcoVAE® 405 resin in
#143 latex, interior, institutional low odor/VOC, flat (MPI Gloss Level 1), formula 10-FL48030
MPI
has set the standards in architectural coatings for nearly 10 years and is the United States government’s
designated source for standards and approvals for both the GSA and US military. In addition, the AIA’s MasterSpec program specifies MPI’s approved Products and paint systems and is
specified by NASA and the Veteran’s Administration, among many others. The new Starting Point Program is aimed at assisting the paint manufacturer by providing third-party
independent testing of paint formulations based on whether they meet the high standards set by MPI. The goal is to accelerate the formulation and testing process in order to reduce the time to market
for paint makers. “We know that this program by the Master Painters Institute will be as important to
the paint manufacturers as the core MPI program is to architects and other specifiers,” Elliott said.
EcoVAE®
brand resins are vinyl acetate ethylene (VAE) emulsions specifically designed for low VOC, low odor
architectural coatings. The EcoVAE® criteria checklist specifies that the waterborne resins are APE-free, having low residual
monomer levels and enabling the coating manufacturer to achieve various green certifications. The guide
formula approved for EcoVAE 401 in MPI #143 is less than 2 g/L VOC and the formula for EcoVAE® 405 in
MPI #44 is less than 50 g/L. “The MPI approval of EcoVAE® is yet another reason to look at vinyl acetate ethylene emulsions today,”
said Elliott. “With both acrylics and styrenics experiencing supply disruptions and escalating costs, there has never
been a better time to look at vinyl systems, including VAE, which offer equal or even higher performance
at an advantaged supply and cost structure.”
